The Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and TVRI Yogyakarta present the fifth episode of OPSI: Psychological Talk, which aired on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM WIB. This episode addresses a highly relevant theme in the digital era, titled “Social Media: Friend or Pressure?”

Social media has become an inseparable part of our daily lives. From waking up to going to bed, almost all our activities are touched by social media. But does social media always bring positive effects? What about side effects such as feeling tired, anxious, or comparing oneself to what is seen on the screen?

The speaker in this episode is Haidar Buldan Thontowi, S.Psi., M.A., Ph.D., a lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology UGM with expertise in educational psychology as well as social and community psychology. His research interests include cultural psychology, social relations, trust, happiness, and achievement. With an international educational background and a focus on educational and social psychology, he brings a unique perspective in understanding human behavior within cultural and social contexts, especially in today’s digital and social media era. In this episode, he thoroughly discusses how social media can be a double-edged sword—both a pleasant friend and a source of pressure that affects mental health.
