Entering the workforce requires more than just an academic degree. Amid increasingly competitive conditions, graduates are expected to be adaptable, committed to continuous learning, and able to uphold integrity in every professional step they take.
These themes were highlighted during the Undergraduate Graduation Briefing of the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) for Period III Academic Year 2025/2026 on Monday (May 18). The session featured Dwi Wulandari, S.Psi., Psychologist, Vice President of Corporate Secretary at PT Kereta Api Logistik, and an alumna of both the undergraduate and professional programs of the Faculty of Psychology UGM.
In her session, Dwi provided a realistic overview of today’s job market. She emphasised that being a graduate of a reputable university is only a starting point for continuous growth in a highly competitive environment.
“Employment conditions are a challenge. This is something all of you will need to face,” she stated.

She stressed that adaptability is one of the key competencies needed to navigate the professional world. At the early stages of a career, individuals are not only expected to fulfil their job descriptions, but also to learn new things, take initiative, and respond quickly to organisational needs.
“You need to have initiative and be proactive at work. If you just sit and wait, you will end up feeling stressed,” Dwi explained.
In addition, she highlighted the importance of resilience in dealing with workplace pressures. According to her, challenges and discomfort are inseparable parts of the learning process in professional life. Graduates are therefore expected to persevere and continue developing, even when faced with less-than-ideal situations.
“Don’t look at things only from your own perspective, but try to see them from others’ perspectives. That is what flexibility means,” she added.
In the context of cross-generational workplaces, Dwi emphasised the importance of flexibility and emotional intelligence. She explained that the ability to understand different perspectives is essential for building healthy and productive working relationships.
Furthermore, she reminded graduates that integrity is the foundation of long-term career development. Professionalism, she noted, is not only demonstrated when one is being supervised but also reflected in honesty, responsibility, and consistency in actions.
“Don’t stop at becoming a graduate and think that’s enough. If you want to grow further, you need to continue learning beyond your degree,” she said.
She also encouraged graduates to continuously develop themselves beyond academic knowledge by broadening their perspectives, pursuing certifications, and building professional networks. According to her, graduates must be able to demonstrate the added value they bring to an organisation.
Through this session, the Faculty of Psychology UGM aims to instil a professional mindset that is adaptive, grounded in integrity, and oriented toward lifelong learning. These values are expected to help graduates not only survive but also grow and contribute meaningfully in their respective fields.
