Center For Indigenous And Cultural Psychology (CICP) Faculty of Psychology UGM presents Theory Building Training (TBT) by lifting the title of Intermediate Level Grounded Theory “Advanced training of basic TBT, containing materials and training for criticizes existing theories and builds new theories through the approach of Grounded Theory “. Training that took place from 26 until 27 April 2019 attended by various circles from various campus institutions in Indonesia such as Department of Medicine, Universitas Islam Indonesia, Bhayangkara University, Jakarta Raya, Ganesha University of Education, UIN Alauddin Makassar, University 17 August 1945, Soegjapranata Catholic University, Al-Azhar University of Indonesia, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, and Universitas Gadjah Mada.
Training on the first day was presented by Dr Bagus Riyono, M. A, who is the lecturer of Industrial and organizational Psychology of the Faculty of Psychology of UGM and the inventor of Ruh theory. Training on the first day is presented in 4 sessions. Where the first session includes general discussion of material regarding Grounded Theory, then examples of research using Grounded Theory, followed by the practice and presentation of results.
In his early training, Dr. Bagus Riyono, M. A said that the theory is used to control social behavioristic engineering which means controlling individual behaviour. From here it will be formed by an operant conditioning mechanism. He further explained that there are 4 theory functions that describe, explain, control and predict.
He also saw that there were still many people who thought the theory was not important when practice was not possible without theoretical help. Without practice, theory cannot be applied. So the theory and practice are 2 things that are mutually supportive and unified. A theory is said to be strong, when he easily practiced. If the theory of difficulty is practiced then the theory will only be on the journal. He cited the heavily criticized Maslow theory, but in the practical world this theory is used everywhere. One characteristic theory is good too, if the theory is parsimony (simple and understandable).
Another thing to be aware of by a qualitative researcher with Grounded Theory’s approach is that researchers cannot ask anything that should be researched to the participants directly. If that happens it means that the research is no longer valid. Because that is precisely what should be explored in Grounded Theory.
Other things that must be aware by a qualitative researcher with grounded theory approachment is researcher could not be asked something that will be found to participant automatically. If that is occurred, which means the finished research be the invalid anymore. Because that must be explored in Grounded Theory.
