The origins of the Faculty of Psychology Gadjah Mada University was the major of Psychology of Faculty of Educational Science, which was established on the academic year of 1958/1959.

Based on the Collective Pronouncement of PTIP and the Minister of PDK, dated May 6th 1964 No. 34 year 1964, the Faculty of Educational Science GMU was united with IKIP Yogyakarta. Thus, the major of Psychology in FES GMU was separated and remained in GMU to become the Psychology Division which was directly lead by the GMU Rector.

Afterwards on June 8th 1985, the Pronouncement Letter of the President of the Republic of Indonesia officially determined that the Division of Psychology GMU as the Faculty of Psychology Gadjah Mada University beginning from December 29th 1964. Hence, January 8th 1965 it has been determined as the official anniversary of the Faculty of Psychology GMU.
