Zaadila Muftial, students of the Faculty of Psychology UGM and M. Khalid Rivaldo from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences UGM chose to challenge themselves out of the comfort zone by attending the National Leadership Forum. This event is one of the series of events of Dies Natalis 4 PKN STAN, held at the state Finance Polytechnic, Bintaro. This event raised the issue of the transfer of the capital of Indonesia with the title “Moving the Capital City Away from Java: A Costs and Benefits Perspective”.

The National Leadership Forum selects all applicants from 91 educational institutions and universities to only 14 teams. The team is a team that is deemed worthy to progress and to develop and explain previously designed proposals. The event opened a discussion room on solutions related to capital transfer. The organizers encouraged participants to choose one of three attitudes towards the transfer of the capital. The attitude option offered is to refuse entirely to this plan by believing that there is no urgency, supporting the transfer of the capital out of Java or supporting the transfer of the capital but still within the island of Java.

The team from UGM expressed the attitude to support the transfer of the capital but remained within Java island with the consideration of ease of bureaucracy, execution efficiency, and long-term impact for the capital transfer perpetrators. Joining Unpad, UGM targeted the long-distance marriage and combined with the narration of Unpad team that creates 10 new Megapolitan instead of moving the capital.

On the other hand, University of Indonesia, Brawijaya University, Sebelas Maret University, Bandung Technology Institute as well as nine other institutions including the host namely PKN STAN expressed the attitude to support the transfer of the capital outside Java Island. On the third axis is to refuse the complete transfer of the capital was allowed by the National Development University Jakarta.

After fighting ideas and arguments, trying to exchange thoughts and diction, the team of UGM was able to overthrow representatives from ITB which is set in the science of regional planning and governance, and representatives of the UI that have the background of the Science of Law and Economics. In the final stage, the team was announced to take two champions, the 2nd Best Speaker and the public champion, with the highest score from all the National Leadership Forum 2019 participants.

“After challenging yourself out of the comfort zone, considering we do not have the knowledge related to the issue of the relocation of the capital, we realize that there are no barriers in the works. This is an encouragement for us to get motivated to achieve in the next races, “said Zaadila.
