Nursing care is the task of nursing practice carried out by the nurse in the hospital. The implementation of the orphanage is based on nursing standards. One important part of nursing care is the spiritual treatment. However, the competency of spiritual care provided by nurses to patients is still low, because nurses prefer physical care and treatment. While spiritual care needs to ensure the patient’s quality of life.
Research was done by Doctoral Program Students of Psychological Sciences, Faculty of Psychology UGM, Henie Kurniawati, S. Psi., M.A., found as much as 50% of the 130 nurses some hospitals in central Java are less competent to provide spiritual care. In addition, it is still found a lack of number of clergy in the hospital, less multidisciplinary cooperation related to spiritual care and the high workload of nurses who do not do spiritual care to patients.
Henie’s research on the determinant of spiritual care involving 311 nurses working in the hospital revealed that social support affects spiritual care, thereby increasing the patient’s degree of health. According to Henie, when the patient experiences conditions that require the system to make adjustments, the patient is said to have powerlessness. Therefore, it is necessary to have an extra spiritual, psychological and physiological effort to reduce these pressures.
The benefits of social support to the health, according to Henie’s research, are able to accelerate healing, improve adjustments to diseases and increase adherence to the rules of drug use and reduce the frequency of pain. “The presence of nurses in providing social support to patients has a great impact on health,” She said.
She added social support is a manifestation of nurse competence in conducting spiritual care because nurses are able to direct the attitude of patients, have a willingness to give help and care for others and contribute to the real great people.
From this study, he concluded the competence of spiritual care that the nurses do is actually able to answer the challenges of the health world. Therefore, competent nurses are at least able to meet the patient satisfaction in the hospital, especially in fulfilling spiritual needs. “This form of spiritual care is capable of encouraging the healthy behavior of patients, motivating patients to heal from the sick and help and facilitate the patient’s worship activities,” She said.
