UGM Faculty of Psychology Hosts International Muslim Psychologist Conference

International Conference of the International Association of Muslim Psychologist was held for the fifth time on on 5-6 November 2016. Universitas Gadjah Mada Faculty of Psychology had been bestowed the opportunity of hosting the major muslim psychologist gathering event. The conference was a joint effort of four universities, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Islam Negeri Yogyakarta, Universitas Islam Indonesia, and Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Also participating in the conference were scholars from The International Association of Muslim Psychologists, Ibnu Khaldun, International Institute of Islamic Thought, and API-HIMPSI (Indonesian Psychological Association’s Islamic Psychological Association).

This year’s conference focused on the topic of “Islamic Child Psychology”, which uses the Islamic and cultural perspective to discuss child psychology. Islamic parenting, children protection from unethical and non-Islamic internet and media content, and school-based health were among topics discussed. There was a workshop held a day before the conference (4/11) about similar but different issues, such as Islamic building theory, family fortification, and drugs misuse in adolescence.

The conference’s keynote speakers hailed from various parts of the world. Prof. Malik Badri, founder of the International Association of Muslim Psychologists, Prof. Rahmatullah Khan from Sultan Idris Education University, Hanan Dover, founder of Mission of Hope from Australia, Dr. Bagus Riyono from Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Prof. Evelyn Witruk from University of Leipzig were some of the total 10 keynote speakers for the event. Each speaker delivered a presentation of their own specific topic.
