Introduction and Data Processing of IFLSWorkshop by Master of Psychological Science Program UGM

(2/10) COVID-19 pandemic condition is one of a challenge for researchers in the field of psychology in carrying out research, especially in the data collection process. Data that usually collected by face-to-face interaction with participants from interviews, questionnaires and experiments in laboratory settings are not able to be conducted during this period of time because it is important to obey the health protocol.

Based on the situation, the Master of Psychological Science Program, Faculty of Psychology UGM and Psychological Masters Student Association held a Workshop about Introduction and Data Processing of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS). The aim of this event is to provide a knowledge about research alternatives, especially for students who will and already took thesis this semester.

This event was opened for public for free and attended by 170 participants from inside and outside UGM. It was opened with short speech from Bhina ​​Patria, S.Psi., M.A., Dr. rer. pol. as the Head of Master of Psychological Science Program, he said “IFLS has a very high potential to be used as a source of data in undergraduate thesis or master thesis research, because there are many psychological variables and data that can be downloaded easily there”.

Furthermore, the event was continued with presentation by the speaker, Dian Fakhrunnisak, M.A. alumni of the Master of Psychological Science Program, UGM. Dian conveyed about the basics of sorting IFLS data according to the needs of each researcher. Previously, the participants had been provided with materials of data sets from IFLS by the committee, so they will be able to simulate data searches independently. Because the data in the IFLS survey was very diverse, not only contain psychological variables and also have massive participants. The first session was start at 9.00 – 11.00 AM, continued with second session, at 1.00 – 3.00 PM.

The second session continued with data processing practices using the syntax in SPSS which was guided by the speaker. Participants are given the opportunity to discuss and also ask further questions to the speakers during this session.
