Guest Lecture Series “Industrial and Organizational Psychology”: The Role of Psychology in the Industrial World

Tuesday (23/2) Faculty of Psychology UGM held an online guest lecture. The event entitled Guest Lecture Series “Industrial and Organizational Psychology” is the first edition of a series of guest lectures held at the Faculty of Psychology UGM until May 2021.

This inaugural guest lecture was attended by 290 students from the Faculty of Psychology. They participated in the event which started at 13.30 WIB until finished at 15.30 WIB.

This afternoon guest lecture was filled by Galih Chrissetyo, ST, MBA, CRMO, senior manager of HR and general affairs of PT PLN (Persero) UIW Suluttenggo (North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, Gorontalo). He presented material entitled “The Role of Psychology in the Industrial World” which explained a lot about how psychological assessment has an important role in the management of human resources at PLN.

In his presentation, Galih explained that the readiness of human resources ready to work in Indonesia is still low. This certainly greatly affects the climate of the job market, which always requires talents who are ready to work with their skills and knowledge.

“According to the Global Talent Ranking, Indonesia is still below Singapore and Malaysia, Indonesia is one level above Thailand” Galih explained.

This is of course a concern for PLN on how to carry out the Talent Management process. PLN has five interrelated and circular strategic points, namely planning, attracting, developing, retaining, and transitioning. The five points are implemented to optimize workforce. Meanwhile, to strengthen the competence of employees, PLN has a milestone for strengthening competency trips. Furthermore, PLN also has the AKHLAK motto that is instilled in its employees at work.

“AKHLAK stands for Amanah; uphold the trust given, Competent; Continue to learn and develop capabilities, Harmonious; Caring for each other and respecting differences, Loyal; Dedicated and prioritizing the interests of the nation and state, Adaptive; Continue to innovate and be enthusiastic in driving or facing change, and Collaborative; Building a synergistic cooperation. ” said Galih.

In all of its programs, PLN always emphasizes cultural development. Galih explained that corporate culture is a pattern that is formed strongly and continuously in behaving, behaving, thinking, and believing in the company organization.

“Culture is the main foundation for PLN in managing human resources. Culture will build readiness for renewal” Galih said.

Continuing his explanation of the importance of cultural development in the company, Galih explained about the culture mechanism which consists of six points, namely tone from the top, standard behavior, rolls and responsibilities, governance, rewards, and employee life cycle. Furthermore, he also explained some myths about culture in the company.

“The myth is that cultural change is the responsibility of the HR function. But the fact is that nearly half of the top CEOs devote most of their energy to focus on building culture and behavior, ā€¯Galih explained.

Culture has a central role in PLN’s strategy in dealing with changing times and differences in creating a work climate. With mutual understanding and communication, all kinds of differences can be synergized.

The event was closed with a short video screening of the program for young generation employees in the scope of PLN and a question session. In this event, prizes in the form of electric stoves from PLN were also distributed to the three best questioners. All participants were very enthusiastic in listening until the event ended. The organizing committee hopes that this event can open up insights from online lecture participants so that psychology is not only synonymous with clinical, but is also very much needed in the fields of industry and organization.
