Open House: A Way to Get to Know UGM Psychology’s Scientific Groups and Supporting Units

Through the open house for scientific groups (kelompok bidang keilmuan/KBK) and supporting units of the Faculty of Psychology, students were introduced even more to the groups and units here. With the theme “Experience The Fun of Psychology”, the open house ran on successfully on Friday, August 31, 2018 in Hall D and G-100 Auditorium.

To kick off the event, there were presentations from scientific groups in the symposium held a week before in Room A-203 on Thursday, August 23, 2018. The presentations were held for lecturers only, but the open house was open for everyone in the faculty, especially for students.

The open house of UGM Psychology was planned to be held once a year, in the start of the semester with the target of introducing the units and scientific groups to new students, as well as for the sophomores, juniors, and seniors to utilize the units and scientific groups for their studies, research, and final projects.

Sticking with the theme, the open house was designed with a ‘carnival concept’ to showcase the scientific groups’ and units’ booths in Hall D, making it easy for every visitor to go from booth to booth. The scientific groups, referred to as KBK, and the supporting units of the faculty put up their booths there, so in Hall D visitors were able to get to know the scientific groups in the field of Education, Social Relations, Human Development, and Psychometrics, as well units CPMH, CICP, UPAP, UKP, and UPTB. The Clinical Psychology and Mind, Brain, and Behavior (MBB) are also part of the KBK (scientific groups), and were put in Auditorium G-100 instead of Hall D because a separate room was needed to give a chance for visitors to experience experimental activities such as virtual reality (VR), adaptability test, and biofeedback therapy.

The open house has been in preparations since the start of August, and all the prep work made it possible to grab the attention of many students. UGM. The publication of college activities through social media also helped students to get in touch with what’s going on in campus, making the spread of information about the open house accessible from broadcasts in Telegram, Whatsapp, and our own integrated information system, SIT.

Wahada Nadya, a senior, was one of the visitors of the open house. According to Wahada, the open house was a great way for students to learn more about the scientific groups and supporting units that were seldom exposed before this.

“Before this, I only know a few, like CICP, CPMH, UPAP, and UKP. The open registration for some units and scientific groups along with information about them make it accessible and give same opportunities for everyone to join,” Wahada explained.

Visitors, mostly students, are visiting one of the booths in Hall D.

Wahyu Jati Anggoro, the coordinator of the open house, hopes that this open house can accommodate UGM Psychology students from the undergraduate until doctorate level. They can benefit through sharing activities, trying out new technology, and making students know the scientific groups and supporting units.

“Furthermore, early on introduction regarding research through the open house can help students accelerate their studies; graduating faster and have more competence in research. For the faculty, this can really help lecturers, by having students that are enthusiastic in researching. It’s all for the greater good of our faculty here in Universitas Gadjah Mada,” he stated.

The visitors of the open house also hope that this event can be done more than once, so that those who haven’t had the chance to come can experience the same benefits and know the units and scientific groups in UGM Psychology better.

“And hopefully in the next open house there can be a board for each booth with the names on it so that visitors can know immediately what booth it is,” said Fana, a sophomore who visited the open house.
