Public Lecture: Internet, Children and Gadget #2 by CPMH

Center for Public Mental Health (CPMH) Faculty of Psychology UGM held the second online public lecture on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. Still raised the same topic about Internet, Children and Gadgets, this event is continuation from previous public lecture on November 27.

The topic for the second discussion are about Warning Signs or signs that appear when someone excessively uses gadgets in daily life. One of the negative effect are, this behavior can lead to mental health problems.

Nurul Kusuma Hidayati, M.Psi., Psikolog, once again had the opportunity to become the speaker for the event.

She explain further about the warning sing when people are categorized too attached with their gadget, those are prioritizing gadgets over other activities, not being open about their online activities, and fear of missing out (FOMO) or fear of being left behind. These can some issues that could used for self-reflection and applies for both adults and children.

Nurul also conveyed some tips for limiting the interactions with gadgets, especially for children, such as providing time limit for accessing gadgets, choosing the right activities or games as a replacement for gadgets, determining screen-free areas at home, accompanying children when using gadgets, and not making gadgets as a reward. In addition, positive communication is also play important role, because it can act as protective factor.

The online lecture session was closed with discussion session that guided by the moderator.
