CPMH UGM Holds Online Summer Lecture Series 2023

CPMH: OSLS 2023

On Wednesday (12/7), the Center for Public Mental Health (CPMH) Faculty of Psychology UGM held an Online Summer Lecture Series (OSLS) 2023 themed Mental Health in the Digital World. Dr. Wenty Marina Minza, M.A., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, officially opened the OSLS and will continue until July 26th.

The event brought together all parties concerned about mental health issues. In addition to learning and discussing, and hope that the 128 OSLS participants can advocate for better mental health together. This year is the third time OSLS has held online; CPMH has previously hosted five summer courses.

“Center for Public Mental Health is aware that advocacy skill is an essential skill in developing or strengthening the mental health system, but there are very few options available to learn advocacy skills, that is why the Center for Public Mental Health consistently does the summer course on this topic,” Diana said.

Diana said that selecting the topic of Mental Health in the Digital World was inextricably linked to the opportunities and challenges it offered. Through many social media platforms, technology in our society creates numerous misconceptions regarding mental health, “We are aware that the digital world provides opportunities and challenges for mental health. The opportunities open for mental health in the digital world expand from life connection, increasing mental health literacy, maybe also preventing us from loneliness, or something like that. And not to mention the opportunity to provide mental health services through digital platforms”.

OSLS will have 23 experts from across the world as speakers. Sári Haragonics, M.A., filmmaker (Hungary); Prof. Sako Visser, University of Amsterdam (Netherlands); Dr. Ursula Read, The University of Warwick (England); and Aneri Pattani, MPH., a journalist at Kaiser Health News (USA), spoke on the first day of the OSLS, Wednesday (12/7).

Wenty Marina Minza, who officially opened the 2023 OSLS, welcomed the participants and appreciated their enthusiasm for studying and discussing mental health problems in the digital world.

“I’m sure this is also as Diana mentioned earlier, this is something very important and significant for the lives of young people today… and I hope in the future more research on mental health and the digital world can be conducted so that we can have more comprehensive understanding of significant phenomena today,” Wenty remarked.
