In order to celebrate the 56th anniversary of Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta which will be commemorated on January 8, 2021, a book titled “Jejak Delapan Tiga: The Life Journey of alumni of Psychology UGM” was published by Abisheka Publisher Dipantara Yogyakarta.
This 536-page book is accompanied by Prof. Koentjoro, Chair of the UGM Board of Professors who is also a lecturer at Faculty of Psychology UGM, contains 54 writings from those who have studied at Faculty of Psychology UGM.
This book was written by 50 graduates from class of 1983 and more than 100 graduates in total. At that time, there were only three universities that had a Faculty of Psychology in Indonesia, those are University of Indonesia Jakarta, Padjadjaran University Bandung and UGM Yogyakarta. In that year, Airlangga University Surabaya opened Psychology study program for the first time, but was still part of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.
Now in 2020, the development of psychology in Indonesia has grown rapidly with the number of 128 universities throughout Indonesia, and the largest number of Faculty of Psychology is in East Java.
However, based on this rapid growth, the question often arises, “What do psychology scholars or psychologists do when they work? What jobs can they be engaged in?”
This book provides a unique perspective, firstly, because the writers were those who entered together in 1983, and now in 2020, they wrote about their experiences, first time after 38 years becoming students. Most of them are almost retired for their career.
That means they are already living life and applying the psychology that they have learned at university, both in their personal life and work.
There are many books about psychology that has been published in Indonesia, but most of them are about the science area, which means it is the books that used as guidance in learning about psychology.
Footprint Eight Three: A Unique Book About Indonesian Psychology book from Faculty of Psychology UGM told a very different story. Because it is revealing about the real experience of the authors who have experienced in their respective fields.
Some of them work as lecturer at universities all over Indonesia, ranging from Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya to Medan. Two of them are Professor Yayi Suryo Prabandari and Professor Yusti Probowati. Six others hold Doctorate degrees from various universities in Indonesia and abroad. All of them are women, the majority of psychology faculty students in general.
The others work for leading companies in Indonesia including Bank Mandiri, BRI, Pertamina and government agencies such as LIPI and the Ministry of Manpower.
Some of those are working in the fields that may not be considered of psychology, such as journalism and multilevel marketing. But psychology is the science of human behavior, so where there is human involvement in it, psychology give contribution.
This is what the book Jejak Delapan Tiga about, which is expected to provide concrete picture of what psychology scholars and psychologists can do in Indonesia.
