Theory Building Training Using Qualitative Methods

Theory Building Training (TBT) is a training in theory building that utilizes qualitative methods such as discourse analysis, meta-ethnography, ethnography, and grounded theory that is delivered through the method of training and practice. The training was organized by one of UGM Psychology’s units, the Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP). The training was held on October 26 – 27, 2018 in Room A-203. It was quite intense, starting from 8 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. in those 2 days.

Fourty people attended this training, with 10 people being lecturers from the faculty and 30 people being non-faculty members from various Indonesian cities, such as Jakarta, Malang, Bandung, and Purwokerto. Almost all participants were lecturers and practitioners. The registration period was open for around 2 weeks and done online by filling out an online registration form.

There were 4 sessions, and each session consisted of a theoretical lecture and practice. The first speaker/trainer was Dr. Bagus Riyono, M.A., a lecturer in the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology from UGM Psychology. The material he delivered was about grounded theory, which then continued with practices on open coding, anchor theory validation, and in-depth interviewing. The second speaker/trainer was Dr. Wenty Marina Minza, M.A., also a lecturer from UGM Psychology who specializes in Social Psychology. Etnographic approach is a theory discussed in session two, by explaining the history, development, concept, aim, and also how to use theory in ethnography.

On the second day, there were 2 speakers/trainers delivering materials on different topics. Dr. Wening Udasmoro, S.S., M.Hum., DEA is a lecturer and also dean of the Faculty of Cultural Studies in UGM. Dr. Wening was the first speaker/trainer on the second day of the training. Discourse analysis was the material she chose to deliver in this TB training. The last session was led by another UGM Psychology lecturer, Fathul Himam, M.Psi., M.A., Ph.D., who specializes in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. The material was on meta-ethnography approach. He explained about theories, types of theories, and steps in meta-ethnography, among other things. At the end of the session, participants were asked to practice analyzing using the meta-ethnography approach. (UGM Psychology PR/Jehna)
