Friday (25/9) the first Theory Building Training (TBT) Intermediate Level was held online by secara daring oleh Center for Indigenous and Cultural Psychology (CICP)
Gadjah Mada University. This TBT is CICP annual agenda. At first this activity was planned be cancelled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, until finally decided to held the event online.
There are 67 participants from various universities in Indonesia participated in this activity. “Even though held in online format, hopefully it can still provide enormous benefits,” said the head of CICP Haidar Buldan Thontowi, S.Psi., M.A. Furthermore, Haidar explained that this activity aims to encourage researchers all around Indonesia to publish their research about Indonesia to international community.
The speakers in the first session were Dr. Bagus Riyono, M.A. Psychologist, lecturer at Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University. Focus of the material presented in this session was Grounded Theory session in Qualitative Approach. “Qualitative is not meant to be generalized” explained Bagus.
Furthermore, Bagus explained “The attitude of qualitative researchers must start from curiosity and openness to get the essence of the data. Don’t be too convince that results are going to be the same as we imagine. Researchers must be prepared for the surprise.”
The second session of TBT was held the following day, Saturday (26/9), with Haidar Buldan Thontowi, S.Psi., M.A., as the speaker, who is also a lecturer at Faculty of Psychology UGM. This session raised a theme about Online Experimental Survey using Quantitative Approach. Generally, the challenge in conducting online experiments is the paid platform, however there is an alternative online platform that can be used, such as google form. Buldan also demonstrate how to make simple experiments using google form and randomization with allocate monsters, free web to randomize the treatment in experiments.
“The tricky part of doing online experiments is designing randomization.” It needs a careful preparation in making the questionnaire or the instrument which later on will be tested on pilot study. So it is important to make a solid experimental design, he explained.
The session ended with question and answer. After completing this activity, it is expected that participants can understand more about data collection and analysis using the grounded theory and experimental survey methods in online research, so online experiments can become an alternative method in this pandemic situation.
