The Scientific Journey of Hypnotic Guided Imagery Study in Indonesia

Hypnotic Guided Imagery (HGI) is not a new topic, but the presence of HGI in the scientific field is often debated. This point of view encourages Prof. Kwartarini Wahyu Yuniarti, M.Med.Sc, Ph.D., a researcher and lecturer at Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University to research and study HGI scientifically.

The research that held under the auspices of Commercial RISPRO Research LPDP attracts experts from various disciplines and universities including Department of Nuclear Engineering and Physics Engineering UGM, Faculty of Psychology, Padjadjaran University, and Faculty of Dentistry, Padjajaran University.

This LPDP Commercial RISPRO research aim to address one of the national problems to build mental health in order to achieve the welfare for society. The basic things the team has done are Systematic Literature Review, Strengthening Evidence-Based Intervention and Ethical Clearance.

The journey of this research continues to develop through various stages including technical coordination meetings about HGI equipment, client therapy, standardized laboratory trials, knowledge sharing, collaboration with hospitals as an advocation steps and also conduct several training in seven centers, including universities. University of North Sumatra, Gunadarma University, Diponegoro University, Widyamandala Christian University, Udayana University and the centers is in Gadjah Mada University.

In the sharing session that held by The Center for Psychological Innovation and Research (PIPP), Faculty of Psychology, Padjadjaran University, Saturday (31/10), there were three speakers who shared their progress and journey of HGI research. Dr. Ahmad Gimmy Prathama Siswadi, M.Sc., Psychologist., lecturer at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Padjajaran explained about the practice and research on Psychotherapy at Padjajaran University, including the goals of psychotherapy, therapeutic competence, and a comprehensive explanation of integrative psychotherapy. According to him “The therapist must treat the client comprehensively, we see it as a whole, not in pieces in order to handle it thoroughly”.

A lecturer who alos a dentist from the Faculty of Dentistry, Padjajaran University, Dr. Gilang Yubiliana, drg., M.Kes. also delivered his study about the application of dental hypnosis, whih called hypnodontics that became the focus of his research. He wants to quantify the dental hypnosis process. “If you want to say scientifically it must be reliable, objective, and repeatable” he explained.

As the head researcher of HGI, at the end of the event, Prof. Kwartarini Wahyu Yuniarti, M.Med.Sc, Ph.D. she urged the participants to share their knowledge and not prioritize egos to looking for who is the best and right. “It is time to integrate and doing collaboration, rather than rivalry. It is no longer time for us to be rivals with each other, but it is time for us to share the knowledge with open mind and heart.”
