The Future of Psychology in Digital Era, Kegiatan Sharing Alumni Lab MBB

(10/10) Mind, Brain and Behavior Laboratory (MBB Laboratory) of Faculty of Psychology UGM organized sharing session with alumni. The event was held online via Zoom Meeting and is open to students and alumni from Faculty of Psychology UGM.

It was started at 3.00 PM with opening speech from Galang Lufityanto, M.Psi, Ph.D, Head of MBB Laboratory and continued with the main sharing session from the speakers, which are Samudra F. Jammaluddin (Digital Content Creator/Writer), Gloria Excelcise (UX Researcher) and Satrio Priyo (Senior UX Researcher). They are alumni who currently working in the digital field.

In the first session, Samudra, who working as psychological content writer on Quora, discussed how to implementing academic & research in digital content. According to him, writing psychological scientific content for general public has its own challenges, including public’s low interest in reading. To overcome this, Samudra conveyed that it is important to be able to deliver the ideas in a logical and coherent manner, besides, illustration can also an element that will add certain value for the readers.

Furthermore, Gloria Excelcise, who is currently active as a UX Researcher at Mamikos, shared his daily job activities and experiences. He explained the difference between UI and UX, and how the UX process was designed to make it easier for users to use the products they made. According to him, empathy is the key to the design process.

The third speaker, Satrio Priyo, who is a UX Researcher Senior at Mamikos, shared his experience in the UX research field. According to him, research experience is a key element in making a portfolio that will be used when applying for UX researcher. Because generally job is about conducting research, the experience of carrying out research will be very helpful in the future.

In addition, the fourth speaker, Zindy Ilmanafia, alumni of Faculty of Psychology UGM class of 2014, who is currently working as UX Researcher in the West Java Digital Service, the Technical Implementation Unit under the auspices of the West Java Provincial Government’s Communication and Information Service Office also shared about her working experience. Zindy conveyed, “the design aim for user to be able intuitively get from A to B”. So in a digital or web application, it is important to understand the user’s point of view.

Based on the speakers, the important keys of UX design are empathy and understanding the user’s point of view, in order to create functional design. Psychology has an important role, because it is involving the study of human cognitive and behavior during design process. The opportunity for psychology graduates to have a career and contribute in UX Research are very much open.

It is hoped that participants and community will get more perspective about the opportunities of psychology in order contribute to the digital world in the future from joining this event.
